The 22-year-old has spent the last two seasons with the club and he wants to stay at the KCOM Stadium for a further spell.

“I’m happy to be here,” Robertson said.

“[Contract] negotiations have already started and hopefully we can get something agreed quite quickly.

“I see my future here and would love to stay. It’s a great club to be at. The people are good and the spirit in the dressing room is brilliant. I’d like to stay here for many years.

The Scottish defender also praised Mike Phelan for his current role at the club and says that he wants the caretaker manager to stay on full time. He has been delighted with the way certain possible distractions have been handled.

“Yeah, very impressed. With all the stuff that is going on and the lack of players, and the way he has conducted himself throughout the whole saga as such has been very good.

He believes that Phelan has put himself in the right position after three wins in both the Premier League and the EFL Cup so far this season.

“That’s his experience of being at Manchester United [as a coach], and working under such a great manager [in Sir Alex Ferguson] and I’m sure that’s helped. I’d like to see him get the job now, we’ve all grown closer together and obviously he’s got three wins and he’s undefeated, so I think he should get the job. But you know that’s up to the people up above, but hopefully they’ll make the right choice.”
