Like Keane, this move could represent a chance to blossom in a first-team environment.
Weir, 21, joined United in 2008 from Preston North End and was the captain of their Under-21 side. He should know caretaker manager Mike Phelan from his time at the Old Trafford club as a coach.
He was part of the team that won the Professional U-21 Development League in the 2014-15 season, with Manchester United gathering 40 points over 22 games.
The team defended their title in the following season, finishing on 48 points after 22 games.
In the 2015-16 season as some young players were promoted to the bench under Louis van Gaal because of injuries, he was an unused substitute seven times.
He made his only first-team appearance for the side in a 3-2 win against Arsenal, replacing Ander Herrera.
