Hull City face a fight to progress into the final of the EFL Cup after losing 2-0 to Manchester United in their semi-final first leg at Old Trafford.
An easy goal for Juan Mata from a number of yards right in front of Eldin Jakupovic’s goal opened the scoring after 56 minutes, with the Spaniard becoming the 42nd player to put the ball into the back of the Tigers’ net this season with a volley.
As the game looked to be heading to a tight 1-0 advantage for the Red Devils to take into the second leg, Marouane Fellaini headed the ball into the net with just around three minutes to go as Hull conceded their 50th goal of the season in just their 26th game.
Both teams hit the woodwork throughout the game and threatened, with Adama Diomande hitting the post in the first half before being ruled offside, while Paul Pogba delivered a free-kick which also struck the upright as the home side threatened to go 2-0 ahead.
The away side had many chances in the first half before United’s second-half dominance came through and gave another credible performance following just a 1-0 defeat against the same opposition in August. However, Hull’s game will be remembered for the injuries of Markus Henriksen (shoulder) and Josh Tymon after naming a squad of just 17 players as shades of the early season squad depth problems returned.
These two sides face each other again at the KCOM Stadium on 26 January to decide the second team into the final to play either Liverpool or Southampton.
